Re tabo -- it's safe. A tabo is just a water scooper, usually made of plastic but sometimes made of metal. Before modern showers became common (in my parents' generation), Filipinos would have giant bukkits of water in the bathroom for bathing. (Bathtubs were considered incredibly wasteful -- so none of that.) You'd heat the bukkit of bathwater by adding a kettleful of boiling water, then scoop the water over yourself one tabo at a time. Soap, tabo. Shampoo, tabo. Like that.
