Arizona Prop 102
A proposition to ban gay marriage in the Arizona constitution is yet again being put to the voters. A cool $7 million has been donated in support of this effort.
Seven freaking million dollars.
That kind of money would be able to fill up food banks, provide job training services for the unemployed, provide health care for the uninsured, serve the needs of the elderly, save women and children in crisis.
But no! This money needs to be spent to make a constitutional amendment of something that is and should remain a religious institution.
Help the needy? Make the world a better place? Pfffffftttt. Who wants to do that when you can cram your own beliefs down the throats of others.
Oh - and it's already a state law.
Some people are only happy when they can marginalize an entire category of people.

10 Reasons Why Gay Marriage is Wrong
1) Being gay is not natural.
And real Americans always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, and air conditioning, tattoos, piercings and silicon breasts.
2) Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay.
In the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.
3) Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior.
People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract. Lamps are next.
4) Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all;
Hence why women are still property, blacks still can't marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.
5) Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage were allowed;
And we can't let the sanctity of Britney Spears' 55-hour just-for-fun marriage be destroyed.
6) Straight marriages are valid because they produce children.
So therefore, gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn't be allowed to marry because our population isn't out of control, our orphanages aren't full yet, and the world needs more children.
7) Obviously gay parents will raise gay children,
Since, of course, straight parents only raise straight children.
8) Gay marriage is not supported by religion.
In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That's why we have only one religion in America.
(AmyH notes - for the record, my church was the first mainline denomination to ordain a gay minister in 1972. Our congregation includes many GLBT individuals and couples, some who were married recently in California and we're having recognition ceremonies to celebrate as a church family.)
9) Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home.
Which is exactly why we as a society expressly forbid single parents to raise children.
10) Gay marriage will change the foundation of society; we could never adapt to new social norms.
Just like we haven't adapted to cars, the service-sector economy, or longer life spans.
VOTE NO ON 102
Comments
We defeated it in 2006 already, but this is the next run at it. The 2006 initiative failed because it was all about domestic partner benefits, which would have affected a lot of people outside of the GLBT community - especially seniors who shack up together but don't want to intermingle all their legal complexities.
And if there's one group we have a lot of out here, it's retirees.
This year they are going straight on for the gays, so to speak. Not sure how it will fare. We're a really conservative state, unfortunately. Too bad their want for smaller government does not translate into keeping the government out of private citizens' lives.
Ugh - there's a Vote Yes on 102 adbot on the bottom of my post.
GET OFF MY LAWN, STUPID GOOGLE AD!!!
(yes, the prop 8 stuff here may drive me ballistic)
Ugh. We couldn't fight it off here in Oregon- fucking Loren Parks, this rich guy who doesn't even live here, poured tons of money into it from Nevada (and is funding a bunch of stupid crap this election too). I wish he would stay out of our business!
Good luck in Arizona and California!
