Better late than never: Show us your team
I still don't have my voice back. Michigan State hockey won the National Championship yesterday. As much as I love football and basketball, my heart has always been with the hockey team.
MSU was down 1-0 going into the third period. Things were looking glum but the team never gave up. Neither did our group of alums, chanting "Go Green! Go White!" a thousand miles away. MSU ties it up and then with 18.9 seconds left, scores the go ahead goal. Boston College pulls their goalie and State scores with 1.7 seconds left and the team goes nuts.
In a real show of class, BC coach Jerry York tells the refs to run out the clock and let the Spartans have their moment. Thanks, Coach York.
The crowd was definitely pro-State. Maine folks, North Dakota folks - everyone seemed to be pulling for the Green & White. Everyone loves an underdog. Or everyone hates Boston College.
The State goalie, Jeff Lerg, is 5'6". He's a foot shorter than most of the goalies he faces. Way to go, Lergie.
Here's what Rick Comley, out from the shadows of legendary MSU coach Ron Mason (now athletic director) said of the team:
"We know we're not fancy, and we know we're not picked by anybody to win anything, but what a great, great group of kids," Coach Comley said. "And they deserve this. One thing those kids have always wanted is to be proud to be a Spartan. They want so badly to walk around with their head high, and to represent the program in that locker room, and now they're going home with a national championship. I couldn't be prouder of them."
Me, too. Thank you, boys. Great job.
Go State!
