The High Price of Vanity

Do you have one leg shorter than the other? Seriously, that might be a cause of hip probs. Running would exacerbate it.
[this is good]
This is really good!
I DO feel so much better after forcing myself to yoga or bike or walk, too. It's that horrendous lack of motivation that stops me! But....I have been receiving glimpses of hope from my subconscious that I will soon be wanting to get out of my hibernation and get moving again! Yay!!

Nothing feels better than loose clothing, for sure! I gained back my tummy roll after India because I am home and drinking wine again. Sigh! ;)
That's a really good point. Or your hips might be displaced. My right hip used to be slanted an inch higher than my left, and a wonderful chiropractor set things right. Now no more pain!

Take care of yourself. (And enjoy feeling comfortable in that skirt!)
Good advice jaypo and shush now....do they have orthotics for running with those kinds of problems?

(exacerbate...good one, jaypo! )

My hips are crooked, as is my right leg. Not enough for other people to really notice. What's odd, is that my right side is my 'pain side' and where I have the most problems. But it's my left that hurts.

I'm not built to be a runner. I'm better at the swim and the bike. But this sounded like a crazy event so I signed up. Again - seemed like a good idea at the time...

As I said to Jaypo, I'm built all wrong to run. My chiropractor friend has solved my chronic lower back pain due to my wonky hips, but this is a new one. He'll adjust as needed (and never more), but I'll have to go to my massage therapist friend for this. Oh, darn. ;-)

seemed like a good idea at the time...

That's our Amy!

I have one leg about almost a centimeter shorter than the other. I wear a little heel insert in my shoes to make up for it. Your hips might be crooked b/c of a leg discrepancy.

Everything is connected. When there's a mechanical imbalance, your body tries to compensate in way we can't imagine--referred pain is one of them. If you really want to do the race, go see a podiatrist and ask him to check it out. I wouldn't wait until things start jamming up...

Because of my crookedness, I usually hit the ground on the outside of my heel. This was starting to make my knees ache now that I'm running a lot more and a lot farther than usual.

I switched to shoes with reinforced heels to correct that. I think that's why my hip hurts - I've changed how I hit the ground.

I need to get to one of the fancy running stores that analyze your movement and tell you what kind of shoes are right for your stride. I just haven't had a chance yet.

I usually hit the ground on the outside of my heel

Also, Amy--if your leg is shorter than the other--that means your foot is hanging in the air for a fraction of a second longer than it needs to before planting. With that extra time, your natural stride is interrupted, the ankle/foot begins to relax, and you land on it off-center (or whatever is "normal" for you). Just a thought...

I had x-rays done back in high school when my back was killing me. The doc said it looked like my pelvis fused together crooked when my bones 'settled in', or whatever you call it when your baby bones get hard. That brings up one of my legs, and I have to get everything put back into place every so often.

But you are right, I need to finally get the shoe issue figured out.

And the leg discrepency issue...

Boy, I'm just a wreck, aren't I! :-)

Yes, because you don't want to have to stop running altogether or do yourself harm beyond the "pain".

That's awesome! The race looks like a lot of fun. I've noticed that I'm not really built to be a runner, either, yet I do it anyway, often in the dark and cold. There are days that I can barely walk because of the pain shooting down through my right hip and leg.
How far is your leg of the race? That actually looks like a lot of fun!
I run three times over a 24-hour period for a total of 16.1 miles or so. If you go to the course map, you can see all three of my legs, elevation changes and a 3D flyover tour.

I feel your pain! Keep up the good work!
Endorphins have a way of making us stoopid, don't they? We should only be running if something is chasing us.
Thanks! After this, I need to sign up for another event so I can stay motivated. Just working out to lose/maintian weight isn't enough. I need to have a competition on the calendar to shoot for. Next one will be swimming or cycling, though. This running crap has got to stop!
It's true, running can be very hard on your body but everything in moderation, I always say.
Take care of yourself, and good luck! *sends motivation*
Reminds me of talking about Phen/Fen a couple days ago. I said that if it were attainable (legally or not), I'd take it again. My coworker asked, "what about the heart/health risk?" I pointed out that the weight loss was immediate, certain, tangible and life changing. The heart concern was a risk, not certain, and intangible. A stupid choice, I'm told - but still one I would probably make.

Do what you can to take care of yourself and good luck in the race!
I need to quit reading your blog. I'm starting to feel like a lazy slob! Ha!!
That's hilarious, and so true. But good for you on sticking with you plan and getting into old clothes. I, too, feel your pain. My hip and back are really killing me right now. I dropped the remote while watching TV last night and must've strained something picking it up :-P

Is your leg of the race shorter than the others?

sorry I couldn't resist.

:-P

I hope you get everything straightened out. I suffered a lot in HS from running. I don't think I was really meant for it either, though in smaller doses I would probably benefit and enjoy it. (Like no more than 2-3 miles at a time, a couple times a week). I was going to suggest some form of massage, maybe look into shiatsu or something. or acupuncture!

(that is my standard suggestion for everything even though I've never done it)
