The High Price of Vanity
All this running is most likely doing irreparable harm to my left hip and my right calf feels like it has been stabbed. But - today I'm wearing a suit I haven't been able to wear in a while because the skirt had been too tight! Now it's loose!
Pain? What pain? Pffft. I'll suffer even more if I can make it into that other suit I adore and haven't worn in a year...
Actually, I ran three miles this morning and felt far better than I did on Saturday, when I felt like my body was made of bricks. It was kind of fun, in a running in the cold and dark kind of way. Which means I'm starting to become delusional.
Not too much soreness, except for when I got out of my car after driving to work. That's when the hip really kills me. Trust me, I'm working on stretcing and other therapy, but I'll just have to suck it up until the race 2/29-3/1.
In the meantime, I'll be pulling out more clothes and seeing what else I can wear before the training is over and I regress into slackerness.

I DO feel so much better after forcing myself to yoga or bike or walk, too. It's that horrendous lack of motivation that stops me! But....I have been receiving glimpses of hope from my subconscious that I will soon be wanting to get out of my hibernation and get moving again! Yay!!
Nothing feels better than loose clothing, for sure! I gained back my tummy roll after India because I am home and drinking wine again. Sigh! ;)
Take care of yourself. (And enjoy feeling comfortable in that skirt!)
(exacerbate...good one, jaypo! )
My hips are crooked, as is my right leg. Not enough for other people to really notice. What's odd, is that my right side is my 'pain side' and where I have the most problems. But it's my left that hurts.
I'm not built to be a runner. I'm better at the swim and the bike. But this sounded like a crazy event so I signed up. Again - seemed like a good idea at the time...
As I said to Jaypo, I'm built all wrong to run. My chiropractor friend has solved my chronic lower back pain due to my wonky hips, but this is a new one. He'll adjust as needed (and never more), but I'll have to go to my massage therapist friend for this. Oh, darn. ;-)
I have one leg about almost a centimeter shorter than the other. I wear a little heel insert in my shoes to make up for it. Your hips might be crooked b/c of a leg discrepancy.
Everything is connected. When there's a mechanical imbalance, your body tries to compensate in way we can't imagine--referred pain is one of them. If you really want to do the race, go see a podiatrist and ask him to check it out. I wouldn't wait until things start jamming up...
Because of my crookedness, I usually hit the ground on the outside of my heel. This was starting to make my knees ache now that I'm running a lot more and a lot farther than usual.
I switched to shoes with reinforced heels to correct that. I think that's why my hip hurts - I've changed how I hit the ground.
I need to get to one of the fancy running stores that analyze your movement and tell you what kind of shoes are right for your stride. I just haven't had a chance yet.
Also, Amy--if your leg is shorter than the other--that means your foot is hanging in the air for a fraction of a second longer than it needs to before planting. With that extra time, your natural stride is interrupted, the ankle/foot begins to relax, and you land on it off-center (or whatever is "normal" for you). Just a thought...
I had x-rays done back in high school when my back was killing me. The doc said it looked like my pelvis fused together crooked when my bones 'settled in', or whatever you call it when your baby bones get hard. That brings up one of my legs, and I have to get everything put back into place every so often.
But you are right, I need to finally get the shoe issue figured out.
And the leg discrepency issue...
Boy, I'm just a wreck, aren't I! :-)
Do what you can to take care of yourself and good luck in the race!
Is your leg of the race shorter than the others?
sorry I couldn't resist.
:-P
I hope you get everything straightened out. I suffered a lot in HS from running. I don't think I was really meant for it either, though in smaller doses I would probably benefit and enjoy it. (Like no more than 2-3 miles at a time, a couple times a week). I was going to suggest some form of massage, maybe look into shiatsu or something. or acupuncture!
(that is my standard suggestion for everything even though I've never done it)
